GA Recorder: "Fleming, Brown Reynolds compete to be Georgia’s next top elections officer"

IndieDems comment: All of Georgia's top elected offices are on the ballot this year, including Governor, Senator, and Commission heads. Who wins each will help shape Georgia's future. But the "down ballot" office that will have the most immediate and profound consequences is that of Secretary of State, the office with oversight of the electoral system. President Trump and his Washington and GA lackeys are continuing his attempt to interfere with the system in order to skew election outcomes in favor of Republicans. Trump's machinations became evident in 2020 when he called up Secretary of State Raffensperger and asked him to "find the votes" that would reverse the fact that Biden had won the state's electoral votes. Georgia remains a key target of Republican efforts to subvert the system. The Democratic and Republican candidates for the office personify the parties' positions.

The Georgia Recorder has provided an excellent overview of the positions taken by Republican Tim Fleming and Democrat Penny Brown Reynolds.

(Excerpts)

  • The two candidates are offering contrasting visions of what voting should look like in the future.
  • Fleming has been a staunch opponent of Georgia’s current ballot-marking devices, introducing a key amendment during the state’s June special session that requires the special election committee to focus exclusively on hand-marked ballot systems. He has also sought to restrict no-excuse absentee voting and “defend” the state’s voter ID laws.
  • Brown Reynolds has focused more on expanding voting access, pledging to defend absentee voting and coming out against the federal SAVE America Act, arguing that Georgia’s current laws already require voters to present their ID at the polls and prevent non-citizens from voting. She has also highlighted her mother’s experience as a poll worker, promising to expand voting rights and support local election officials.
