And having delivered the strongest rebuke in their arsenal, Republicans have resumed their boot-licking, lap dog support for Donald Trump. Some of them will probably be at Mar-A-Lago plying golf with their best friend Trump before the month is out.
I knew from the beginning that Trump and his inner circle would never let up from their assault on America’s basic moral and democratic values and on common human decency itself. I have been surprised, however, at how solidly Republicans as a whole have been willing to go along with the assault and how their “tut tut, you bad little boy” knuckle rap has become the Republican SOP for dealing with Trump’s lies, insults, and slander.
- I had though the inheritors of the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Dwight David Eisenhower would quickly recoil in horror at the constant demeaning of the Office of President of the United States.
How wrong I was, as Isakson, Perdue, Loudermilk, and Handel–and Graham–now demonstrate! Again. But I should have known that Republicans who are comfortable with a President who demeans the military service of John McCain; brags about sexually assaulting women and calls them bimbos; uses ethnic slurs; lied about Obama’s birth place; makes despairing remarks about women’s looks; called African countries “s—tholes”; called a Miss Universe “Miss Piggy”; advocates torture; and approves of calling his own daughter a “piece of a—” would give only glancing attention to an atrocious remark about McCain’s dying.
