Canada Doubles Down on Support for Abortions Abroad

Headline:
“Trump has cut U.S. support for abortions abroad. Canada’s Trudeau is now doubling down on that aid.”
Comment:
One of the great ironies of modern politics is all the energy that Republicans are putting into appointing right-wing ideologues to the Supreme Court, with the aim of someday overturning Roe v. Wade and putting an end to abortion, will not, in the end, put an end to abortion. I mean, a stunning characteristic of the Republican base is that they tell us they know what a lying, dishonest, racist, xenophobic, misogynist, demagogic bullying thug Trump is–they just don’t care, as long as Trump appoints the right stuff to the Supreme Court.
So, we have a generation of Republicans who invoke Jesus’ name in support of things He never said one word about–abortion and gay rights–while completely ignoring the central tenets of Jesus’ teachings: the 10 Commandments and the Golden Rule.
The crowning irony: even if a right-wing Supreme Court should someday reverse Roe v. Wade, it will not end abortion. It will only throw  the issue into the laps of State legislatures–in a country where the pro-choicers are an overwhelming majority. Many states will undoubtedly allow abortions to continue. They will become the mecca to which residents of no-abortion states will flee to have the procedure performed.
And, of course, nearby foreign countries and territories will also be available to pick up the slack.
That is why Prime Minister Trudeau’s act to increase Canada’s funding to protect the sexual and reproductive health rights of women in developing countries is so important. It is a harbinger of things to come. If Canada is willing to take this step now, what will it do to fill the gap if some U.S. States outlaw abortion?
Final question: what proportion of America’s female population will be within an hour’s plane ride of a state or country where abortion is allowed, if some states someday outlaw it all together? For that matter, how many American females will be a one hour or less car ride from a pro-choice state or country?
What a fool’s errand Republicans are on, This is where pure ignorance, and electing the village idiot president, will get you.
