The Washington Post recently published an extensive, balanced analysis of Donald Trump and his relations with the evangelical community:
Opinion columnist focusing on politics, religion and morality in public life. Education: Brandeis University, BA in English & sociology; University of Cambridge, Jesus College, MPhil in Christian theology; Brown University, PhD candidate in religion.
Thank you, Elizabeth Bruenig, for a balanced article that cannot disguise the moral and intellectual corruption that lies at the heart of the evangelical movement, especially those parts of it that avidly support Donald Trump. The evangelicals damn themselves with their own words. The word “specious” was invented to describe the evangelicals’ attempts to use logic and rational thought to explain their position. The word “hypocrisy” was invented to describe how the evangelicals square their beliefs and practices with the teachings of God and Jesus in the Holy Bible. If the evangelicals are Christians, I’m the Easter Bunny.
The arguments that eviscerate the evangelicals’ positions have been so thoroughly expressed–especially by their real Christian critics—it would be superfluous for me to repeat them here. In fact, an evangelical, Ben Howe, has expressed them eloquently in his new book “Immoral Majority: Why Evangelicals Chose Political Power Over Christian Values.” He discussed the book in the Washington Post on August 8.
Two points never to be forgotten when examining whether the evangelicals are right or wrong. One of the chief agents of evangelicalism, the Southern Baptist Convention, was created explicitly to support the view that Jesus approved the perpetuation of slavery. And for 100 years after that, the States of the Confederacy that most rigorously practiced the evil of segregation were the ones that most rigorously practiced evangelicalism. And today, they include the redest of the red states that endorse Trump’s racism, xenophobia, and hate-mongering and approve his treating immigrants the way Hitler treated the Jews.
What else does any human being need to know to damn the evangelicals to hell?
