The Republican Sewer Deepens, cont.

Michael Gerson, former George W. Bush speechwriter and one of the few true conservative voices left in the Republican Party, continues his unabashed revelations of the immorality and depravity in the Republican Party brought to us by the likes of Senators Johnny Isakson and David Perdue and Representatives Barry Loudermilk and Karen Handel. Here’s our comment on his latest, The Trump era is a renaissance of half-witted intolerance.”

Michael Gerson has delivered another insightful, dead-on analysis of Trump and the sorry state of a Republican Party that made him president. It’s what Gerson neglects that troubles me. He fails to mention that the overwhelming majority of Americans know Trump and his Republican lackeys for the evil that they represent. It’s the Republican Party that has gone haywire, not Americans as a whole.

But the minority Republican yahoos wield greatly disproportionate political power through their exploitation of the gerrymander and their access to enormous amounts of money. It’s this ability of a debased minority to subvert the will of the majority that makes the Republicans a frightening threat to American democracy, morality, and common human decency. And as Gerson points out, they’re getting stronger, not weaker.

The analogy with the rise of the Nazis in Germany in the 1930s becomes more apparent with every Trump tweet and pronouncement about “fake news.” Denouncing America’s law enforcement agencies, spewing lies and slander about political opponents, making lying a way of life, openly speaking racist and ethnic slurs, praising fascists as they stage torch-light parades spouting anti-semitism, using vile language to describe foreign countries–all right out of the Nazi playbook.

And supposedly “good” Republicans mimic the supposedly “good” Germans as they retreat into cowardice and muteness as the sewer gains momentum. It’s not just Donald Trump and the extremist yahoos in Republican ranks. It’s the whole debased Republican Party that is a morally and intellectually corrupt, burnt-out case. Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Orrin Hatch, and Nikki Haley–along with Johnny Isakson, David Perdue, Barry Loudermilk, and Karen Handel–are doing more to destroy America than the minority Republican extremist know-nothings.
