Cowardice and Lies: The Republican Way of Life

In a recent back-and-forth debate on the web, one participant said Trump was a coward for refusing to listen to the Turkish tape that reportedly records the brutal murder of Saudi dissident Khashoggi. Someone responded that even Trump’s Republican base would not tolerate cowardice. My comment on the exchange:

My friend, for three years Republicans have shown they absolutely revel in cowardice. As they do with telling lies. They’ve stood for it for three years. What would they change now? Remember: they won the 2018 elections. Der Fuehrer—er, der Donald—done told them so. Who you gonna believe—Trump, or mere truth?

There is something wrong with Republicans, seriously wrong with their moral compass, if they even have one.

But why is this surprising, coming from people whose Party’s chief legacy to America is McCarthyism, Watergate, and Irangate? Trump, Pence, McConnell, Ryan, Haley, Hatch combined the worst of all three and fed the result steroids. Voila, Trumpism.

Remember the connecting link: Roy Cohn, McCarthy’s chief thug and enforcer, a true psychopath—and Donald Trump’s chief mentor. Remember: the Republicans of the 1950s never had an epiphany and turned their backs on McCarthyism. They had to be forced to do so by the weight of public opinion, with President Eisenhower heading a behind-the-scenes action to further the process.

Republicans revel in cowardice and lying. It’s the Republican way of life. In this year’s campaign, they added racism, tribalism, xenophobia, and white nationalism. The more Trump supports that platform, the more Republicans roar their approval. Just like Germans roared their approval of Hitler the more he denounced the Jews and threatened war.

Need I remind you? Georgia Senators Isakson and Perdue, Representatives Loudermilk and Handel, and their staffs  are part of the roaring mob.

The Laughable Idea of Nikki Haley as Trump Alternative

I would hope U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s stamp of approval to Trump’s transparent tolerance of the brutal murder of Khashoggi to serve his own twisted ends has put an end to any idea that Haley is some sort of alternative to Trump. She recently reaffirmed her support for his agenda with a gushing declaration that she wanted him to remain President for six more years. A fitting statement from someone who has been his most faithful lap dog for two years.

A Conservative Speaks: “Vote against all Republicans. Every single one.”

An op-ed by prominent conservative and former Republican Max Boot: Vote against all Republicans. Every single one

INDIEDEMS COMMENT: IndieDems has reported in depth on the growing chorus of prominent Republican and conservative voices that are repelled and appalled at what Trump is doing to their Party and to America. Many of them have left the Republican Party in disgust. (Our most recent post: Georgia Republicans Plunge Deeper into their Trumpian Extremism)

One of the most prominent and outspoken dissenters is Max Boot, a lifelong Republican with sterling conservative credentials. He was editor of the op-ed page of The Wall Street Journal, by the time he was 28, and advised the presidential campaigns of John McCain, Mitt Romney and Marco Rubio. Boot has written a book, “The Corrosion of Conservatism: Why I Left the Right.”

On the eve of the mid-term elections, Boot has written an op-ed, “Vote against all Republicans. Every single one.” It is one of the most powerful indictments of Trump and his Republicans ever written–because, like any good analysis, it rests on solid facts. Boot begins 20 paragraphs with the  words “I’m sick and tired of…” and then states the specific deed or word of Trump or his Republican sycophants that has attacked America’s moral and democratic values.

  • I’m sick and tired of a president who pretends that a caravan of impoverished refugees is an “invasion” by “unknown Middle Easterners” and “bad thugs” — and whose followers on Fox News pretend the refugees are bringing leprosy and smallpox to the United States. (Smallpox was eliminated about 40 years ago.)
  • I’m sick and tired of a president who cheers a congressman for his physical assault of a reporter, calls the press the “enemy of the people ” and won’t stop or apologize even after bombs were sent to CNN in the mail.
  • I’m sick and tired of a president who presides over one of the most unethical administrations in U.S. history — with three Cabinet members resigning for reported ethical infractions and the secretary of the interior the subject of at least 18 federal investigations.

All normal Americans will already know the truth which Boot speaks. It’s Trump’s supporters who need to get the message. Suggestion: send this to all your Trumpist family members, colleagues, and acquaintances. No need to be provocative. Just attach a comment “Just FYI.”

Also: Put it in an e-mail to your elected Republican politician and ask them for their comment. Just think: everything that Boot is sick and tired of, Republicans like Senators Johnny Isakson and David Perdue; Representatives Barry Loudermilk and Karen Handel; and GOP gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp find perfectly acceptable.

Interior Secretary Zinke: More Republican Gutter Ethics–Approved by GA Republicans

Ryan Zinke, Trump’s Interior Secretary, Faces Increased Ethics Scrutiny

IndieDems Comment:

Another of Trump’s Republican Cabinet Secretaries shows his absolute contempt for any semblance of ethical standards. Zinke threatens to surpass Scott Pruitt in flagrant flaunting of corrupt behavior.  The Scott Pruitt, you remember, who bathed himself in corruption while head of the EPA–and whom Trump never fired, but who resigned because of family matters–and left office with Trump’s praise ringing in his ears.

As you read, remember: Zinke and the President who appointed him continue to have the full endorsement of Georgia Republicans like Senators Johnny Isakson and David Perdue; Representatives Barry Loudermilk and Karen Handel; and GOP gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp. They keep proving over and over again that they will follow Trump into the deepest levels of moral and intellectual corruption.

For Isakson, Perdue, Handel, Loudermilk, and Kemp, being lap dogs for Donald Trump takes precedent over the interests of the United States and its citizens.

GA Republicans Endorse Trump’s Escalation of Lies & Demagoguery

No a single Georgia Republican has bothered to criticize Trump’s flagrant, craven demagoguery conveyed in these latest reports. Their silence tells all you need to know about  Johnny Isakson, David Perdue, Karen Handel, Barry Loudermilk, Brian Kemp, Nathan Deal, etc.

America “Deeply Divided”? Says Who?

Ben Sasse, a Republican, represents Nebraska in the Senate and is the author of the new book “Them: Why We Hate Each Other and How to Heal.” IndieDems applauds Sasse’s attempt to damp down the tribal bitterness that divides us and believes he has offered some valuable insights into how to get there. He is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and we thought his overall role in the hearings was positive. The Washington Post recently published an op-ed adopted from the book. Here are IndieDems comments.

I am a Democrat who admires Ben Sasse’s effort to stand back and objectively analyze what ails the American body politic.

But let me state something for the record, not to directly differ from anything he says. I dispute the common refrain that our country is deeply divided on virtually all major issues.

Immigration? The polls consistently show that a majority of Americans want a solution that incorporates our traditional openness to accepting foreigners. The hate-filled depiction of foreigners as threats to society is an invention of Donald Trump and his Republicans, not something that reflects a deep division swelling up from grassroots America.

Health care? See Dana Milbank’s analysis that shows Republicans desperately trying to disguise their previous venom against Obamacare, now more popular than when Trump became president.

Detaining children in tent camps? What Americans other than Trump and his Republicans support such cruelty?

Unfettered tribal divisions? Hillary got three million more popular votes than Trump and his approval rating has never risen above about 40 percent. A 60-40 split represents deep division? Please.

A deep division over body-slamming people and repeatedly demeaning women? Please, don’t insult America by saying the trash who applaud such savagery are anything but a swinish minority.

Most importantly, Trump’s congenital lying. If Republicans have a valid agenda with deep popular support, why do they have to repeatedly tell lies in order to promote it? Name me the currently serving prominent Democrat who has made over 5,000 false or misleading statements since January 2017.

How many prominent conservative stalwarts have deserted the Republican Party? How many liberal stalwarts have deserted the Democratic Party?

Mr. Sasse’s call for a deeper look at what divides us is commendable. But let’s not lose site of the moral and intellectual corruption of the Republican Party that lies at its core.

Post-Kavanaugh: It’s a Great Day to be a Democrat

It’s a great day to be a Democrat.

We Democrats know that Hillary got 3 million more votes than Trump, and his approval rating for 21 months has hovered around 40 percent at most. Plus, Obamacare is more popular today than when Donald took office, as Americans began to understand what Republicans actually stand for. We Democrats have not committed the anti-Christian act of locking up kidnapped children in tent cities.

We Democrats are proud to be the antithesis of Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, Mike Flynn, Rick Gates, George Papadopoulos, Scott Pruitt, Tom Price, and Ben “Furniture Guy” Carson. And Brett Kavanaugh, who is the soul brother of all the above.

Democrats have not attended a trump Tower meeting with Russians bent on subverting our electoral system. We Democrats are not in love with Kim Il Jong and Vladimir Putin. We don’t have an urge to touch women’s private parts, much less brag about it. Or call a female a dog.

We Democrats do not approve of inviting Kanye West into the Oval Office to deliver an incoherent, profanity-laden diatribe. We do not believe such acts will make America great again.

We Democrats are happy to see our opponents double down on proving how anti-Christian and out of touch with basic American values they really are.

The Nikki Haley Myth, Created Right in Front of Our Eyes

U.N Ambassador Nikki Haley’s resignation has triggered a media frenzy of gushing praise of her as a person and politician, highlighted by hints–but little evidence–that she has stood up to her mentor, Donald Trump.

IndieDems not only does not share the positive view being spread about Haley, we consider it egregiously misplaced. Haley has struck us as one more Trump lap dog, different by only a few degrees from the rabid Trumpists who make up most of his base. She is a poster child for what we dub the “tut-tut” Republicans—the ones who effusively support Trump as President but who do manage to utter a few critical remarks over some of his most offensive words or deeds. In short, they’re cowards, desperately trying to have their cake and eat it too.

Let’s begin with Haley’s most important words at her joint press conference with Trump, where she announced her resignation:

“No, I’m not running for (president) in 2020. I can promise you what I’ll be doing is campaigning for this one. So, I look forward to supporting the president in the next election.”

My. Nikki Haley just announced she is eager to inflict Trump on the United States for another six years, and will do her part to keep the lying, adulterous, racist, sexist, misogynist, xenophobic, authoritarian-worshipping, demagogic, bullying thug in power. And the media and commentators swoon at her feet.

On about the same day that Trump declared Dr. Ford’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee that Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her was nothing but a hoax—thereby dismissing the entire #MeToo movement as nothing but a sham and a fraud—Nikki Haley goes out of her way to repeat her effusive praise for Donald Trump and call for his re-election.

And this person is some sort of anti-Trump hero? What piece of the puzzle are we missing?

We look for Haley’s specific acts or words that set her apart from Trump. We find thin gruel. The media fall all over themselves citing the fall-out over her premature announcement in April that the Administration was about to impose new sanctions on Russia. Trump’s National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said Haley had bungled the announcement out of “confusion.” Haley shot back: “With all due respect, I don’t get confused.”

Wow. One of the few times Haley has publicly butted heads with her superiors, it was not to state a difference of opinion on policy. It was because she had been personally affronted. And she did not criticize Trump. She rebuked one of his lesser underlings. What a smashing act of courage!

Another overblown claim that allegedly set Haley at odds with Trump involved his words of praise for the participants in the white supremacist demonstrations in Charlottesville. All she ever said publicly was that that she had a “personal conversation” with Trump about his response to the violent clashes and that she would “leave it at that.” In response to later questions from reporters, she would not confirm or deny whether Trump acknowledged he made a mistake with his racially charged comments.

As usual, Haley took the coward’s way out and avoided any serious criticism of Trump’s overt display of racism, while slyly implying dissent.

Climate Change

Haley has engaged in the same shuffle and jive on the critical issue of climate change. Trump has declared that the idea of global warming is a hoax created by the Chinese “in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.” Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris climate accord, the signature international agreement to reduce global warming by limiting carbon emissions According to media reports, Trump Administrative officials avoid using the term “climate change” altogether.

In a CNN interview in 2017, Haley said that Trump “knows that (the climate’s) changing and that the US has to be responsible for it” and that withdrawing from the Paris agreement would not change the country’s commitment to curbing climate change.

“Just because the US got out of a club doesn’t mean we aren’t going to care about the environment.” (One news service headlined Haley’s words: Watch Nikki Haley Lie Through Her Teeth About Trump’s Commitment to Fight Climate Change)

In the months since, the Trump Administration has rolled back a wide variety of regulations that protect our water, air, land, and public health in order to benefit high-pollution industries, with the carbon-producing coal industry among the biggest beneficiaries.

In august 2018, Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency delivered its biggest blow to environmental regulations aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The EPA’s new plan would devolve regulation of coal-fired power plants back to the states, a move that would almost certainly boost the coal industry and increase carbon emissions nationwide.

In short: when Nikki Haley states Trump is going to do something about climate change, she is either a consummate liar or God’s pure fool.

Nikki Haley’s Cold, Cold Heart toward Child Abuse

One other specific current issue on which Haley shows her lack of a moral conscience is her acquiescence in President Trump’s incarceration of hundreds of kidnapped migrant children in tent cities on our southern border. Trump began the detention plan in May 2018 but modified it under outraged public opinion, and Federal courts forced the Trumpists to release hundreds of those originally detained.

But here is the chilling report on October 1 by

A record nearly 13,000 migrant children are currently detained in shelters across the United States.

  • But while most of them have been housed in private shelters or foster homes to date, hundreds are now being shuttled to a tent city in Tornillo, Texas.
  • Around 1,600 children from across the country have been moved in recent weeks, loaded onto buses in the middle of the night that are headed toward Tornillo, reports The New York Times.
  • They are reportedly moved in the middle of the night, with minimal warning, to offset the likelihood that they will try to escape.
  • The move is reportedly intended to make room for additional children that are being detained, with the older ones who are expected to be released sooner being sent to the tent camp.
  • But unlike in the other facilities, in Tornillo, the children do not receive the same care or access to facilities.
  • The camp in Tornillo is not licensed, nor is it monitored by state child welfare authorities.

Trump admin’s ‘tent cities’ cost more than keeping migrant kids with parents

In June 2018, the U.N. human rights council called on the U.S. to stop separating migrant children from their parents and the council’s chief called the Trump administration’s policy on migrant children ‘unconscionable.’

In response, Ambassador Haley accused the U.N. of “hypocrisy” for calling out the U.S. “while it ignores the reprehensible human rights records of several members of its own Human Rights Council…Neither the United Nations nor anyone else will dictate how the United States upholds its borders.”

The United States then officially withdrew from the U.N. Human Rights Council, claiming its overall record was one of hypocrisy and tolerance for human rights abuses.

Report: Nikki Haley Has Up To $1 Million in Debt, Which May Explain Her Resignation

A Google search indicates the cruelly detained children are a dead letter as far as Nikki Haley is concerned.

The Haley Myth

The gushing praise of Haley since her announcement of her resignation is proof positive that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Trump has become such a caricature of an unintelligent, uninformed, unfit right-wing fanatic, and Republicans as a whole nothing more than his lackeys, some Americans and the media desperately grasp at straws to find a Republican hero to champion, and Haley satisfies their need.

But her track record—and her effusive continuing endorsement of Trump—shows what inflated nonsense this is. Nikki Haley is not the American Joan of Arc, by a country mile.

The Real Lessons of the Kavanaugh Fight

I urge my fellow Americans to lift themselves above the partisan rancor over whether Ford or Kavanaugh is telling the truth and view Kavanaugh’s victory in the larger context of the Americans who put him on the Supreme Court, i.e., the Americans for whom it is commendable to:

–Brag about sexually assaulting women and call them bimbos
—Commit serial adultery
—Praise neo-fascist demonstrators marching in a Nazi-inspired torch light demonstration chanting anti-Semitic slogans
—Kidnap migrant children and detain them in tent cities, with no regard for reuniting them with their families
–Call a female a dog
–Call a Miss Universe “Miss Piggy”
–Approve of calling Ivanka “a piece of ass”
–Demean the military service of John McCain
–Mock a handicapped person
–Mock and demean a woman who accused a powerful male of asexual attack
–Belittle a Gold Star American mother
—Praise the murderous thugs Putin and Kim Jong Un
—Call foreign countries “shitholes”
–Accuse Obama of engaging in a criminal conspiracy to hide his real birthplace
—-Lie about undocumented immigrants being mostly rapists and criminals
—Tell 5,000+ other lies as President

The above represents the hearts and souls, the innermost character, of Brett Kavanaugh and his Republican constituents. This mentality is now embedded in the Supreme Court. Mark it well.

What the Pro-Kavanaugh Cabal Ignored

The flawed, circumscribed, and almost worthless FBI “investigation” received wide publicity. The other factors Republicans ignored in order to make Kavanaugh a Supreme Court Justice:

—Kavanaugh’s lies to the Judiciary Committee about his drinking and comportment as a young man
—His lie about his references to Renate in his yearbook being innocent fun, devoid of sexual content, and his debased character for writing them
—The statement by Renate herself about how hurtful his words were
—Kavanaugh’s unqualified declaration of being a committed right-wing zealot in his last speech
—The call for a no-vote by Kavanaugh’s former college drinking partners
—The petition calling for “No” signed by, I believe, thousands of legal professionals
—Former SC Justice Stephens’ call for a no-vote
—Trump’s outrageous speech mocking Ford. Nothing better revealed the true hearts and souls of Kavanaugh’s Republican supporters. Collins’ silence amounts to de facto endorsement.
—The speeches by McConnell, Grassley, and other GOP Senators calling for a yes vote. They sounded as if Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey, Al Franken, Moonves, etc., etc. never existed.
